People In Music History
Satie, Erik (Alfred Leslie) (1866-1925) French composer. For a time he worked
as a cafe pianist, etc., and at 39 became a pupil of Roussel and d'lndy. He
influenced younger composers toward a cool, clear style and away from the
lushness sometimes associated with Impressionism. His piano solos and duets
mostly have eccentric titles. such as 3 Pear-shaped Pieces. Several of these
were orchestrated by Poulenc and others. He also wrote ballets, including
Relache (the word displayed by French theatres when they are closed),
operettas, Mass (Messe des pauvres), and a symphonic drama, Socrates.
